THY WILL BE DONE: Thy Will Be Done is a story of faith, brutality, vengeance and redemption. In this literary crime novel/psychological thriller set in Lordsburg, New Mexico, 70 miles from the Mexican border, a man calling himself Jebb – providing no identification and giving no other name – goes to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office and presents a sack of small bones to Sheriff Victor Montoya. Jebb confesses to the murder of a child, but won’t name the child or provide details of the murder. He refuses a lawyer and asks only to see a chaplain while he is held in Hidalgo County Jail.
Sister Madalena Miguel, a Catholic religious sister working under Father Augustin Coronado, a local priest and head chaplain of the jail, is assigned to minister to Jebb. Raised between Isla Mujeres and south Texas, the descendant of Mayan priestesses and a Nissei internee, Madalena carries her own dark past and secret life in Lordsburg. She visits Jebb in the jail, and this cryptic, remote, tormented man promises her he will reveal the truth of the child murder – but only if Madalena performs an errand, which becomes a series of strange and increasingly dangerous missions that lead Madalena to her own fatal choices and the solving of the child murder. PLEASE COOPERATE - A Comedy of Bad Manners: “Many people would die to live in a Manhattan apartment. Somewhat fewer die for one. So much comes down to real estate.” So begins Please Cooperate, a comedy of manners about social class, money and real estate - and how we live now. Narrated by Derek Guston, a social worker at a Bronx psychiatric clinic, who's clinging to his modest Manhattan studio apartment and his dissolving middle-class life, Please Cooperate tells how one little building’s seemingly minor problems, like drips in a leaking roof – dear God, the roof – accumulate and explode in a conflagration of class conflict, enmity, destruction and murder. Please Cooperate follows the lives of neighbors and friends in the perfect Upper West Side co-operative brownstone – a building where middle class people bought affordable apartments before the market exploded, where neighbors share their keys, apartments, dinners, vacations, their beds – their lives – a place where everyone cooperates for the common good. Until they don’t. A love letter and lament for middle-class life in New York and America. Read an excerpt of Please Cooperate - A Novel by Jeffrey Harper...
